Q&A with Charlotte Football commit Tyson Clawson

by Agent49 | Sep 3, 2020 | Football

Back in May the Charlotte 49ers secured a verbal commitment from Tyson Clawson, a local edge rusher from Independence HS. Recruiting Charlotte and the surrounding area has a been, and continues to be, a priority for Healy’s staff. It was a notable area of concern when he was hired and to their credit, they’ve hit it head-on in our backyard.

Clawson has shined for the Patriots where he has amassed 135 tackles, 34 TFLs and 23.5 sacks over his Sophomore and Junior seasons, and was named to the Southwestern 4A all-conference team this past season.

Given Clawson’s undersized stature as an Edge rusher, watching a guy like Markees Watts up close for a year will be a great experience.

Tyson is the premiere pass rusher in the Southwestern Conference and one of the best in the Charlotte Metro Area. He comes from an excellent family and is an intelligent, well-spoken young man who should blossom at the college level and realize his full potential.

Q&A with Clawson

A49: Tyson, congratulations on your commitment to Charlotte. What led you to choose Charlotte?
TC: I have always had a dream of playing D1 football in front of my family and friends. We are a really close family including my grandmothers, grandfather as well as cousins aunts and uncles who have watched me play since I was 8 years old. They have always been in the stands for me and I wanted to make sure even with college that didn’t change. Also I love the campus and I have watch it grow over the years. Speaking with Coach Healy and Coach West I like the enthusiasm in their voice and I knew they were two coaches that I felt I could play for and develop. I also like the direction that the program is going. From the beginning I put down five schools that I wanted to attend before the recruiting started and Charlotte has always been at the top.

A49: Who on the Charlotte staff was your primary recruiter? What’s that relationship like?
TC: Coach Woodiel was in charge of my recruiting, but I’ve been in contact with Coach West more. He returns my texts send DMs promptly. Even though I’ve already committed he still makes me feel like I’m priority

A49: Obviously you are a local recruit, but what were your thoughts on campus and the facilities?
TC: I love the campus and the continued growth. I love the new logo and get excited when I hear the plans for the future of the facilities. I know it is something I want to be a part of. There is no better campus in NC.

A49: When are you looking to enroll? Any plans on what you’re looking to study at Charlotte?
TC: 4. I spoke with my family and high school coach as well as coach Healy about and enrolling early. Of course it depends on how the virus dictates school as well as athletics. It’s hard to imagine not having my senior year of football but it’s slowly becoming a reality. Right now I value being a kid and a high school senior and everything that goes along with it. If things are taken away such as in classroom learning, prom, graduation, and athletics, I don’t see that there is any reason for me to stay in high school. I know that enrolling early and getting into the program and learning the Charlotte football way would be a big advantage and I take that into consideration as well. I plan to study pre-med.

A49: In addition to Charlotte, what other programs have offered you?
TC: I have been offered by Air Force Academy, Brown University, Eastern Illinois University, Mercer University, Gardner-Webb University

A49: How excited are you to play college ball in the 704?
TC: I am very excited to be playing at home. I am lucky to be in such a great city and Charlotte has everything that I could want and need. I have dreams of being so large and playing so well that Charlotte will be a household name to everyone in the country. Hopefully I can get on a billboard in downtown Charlotte one day. lol

49: How would you best describe your style of play?
TC: In one word, tenacious! I pride myself on outworking everyone. Every play, every down you will get 100% of me. I may not be the biggest, the fastest, or the strongest, but my effort every play will be unmatched. If you are going up against me that is something you have to be prepared for. As soon as you slip, take a break, or false step, I’m hitting your quarterback.

A49: Any message you’d like to share with Niner Nation?
TC: With myself, coach Healy, coach West, and what I see so far with my recruiting class and the players there already……GET READY TO SHAKE UP THE WORLD!!!
