Jared Garcia enters the transfer portal

Today Verbal Commits broke the news that Charlotte basketball big man Jared Garcia has entered his name into the transfer portal. After playing 10mpg during his freshman season, Garia played just over 7mpg this season in what seemed like sporadic rotations. With the announcement that Luka Vasic was returning for another season, it seems highly probable that Garcia could look elsewhere to find more consistent minutes.

Stats while at Charlotte

With the departure of Jared Garcia, head coach Ron Sanchez now has 3 scholarships at his disposal to help with building his roster for the future. This could turn into 4 if Jahmir Young chooses to to stay in the NBA Draft (announced yesterday that he’s testing the waters), or it’s not out of the realm of possibility for Young to leverage his success here for a call up to a Power 5 program should he enter the portal. To Sanchez and staffs credit, the development of Young during his time here is clear and it’s landed him in the currect 2023 mock draft according to NBAdraft.net (source).

It’s also early in the portal process, so there could be more entrants from Charlotte, but also look for the staff to heavily recruit the portal as well for talent.

Pending other transfers/additions, I’d love to see Charlotte add an experienced big man to push Aly Khalifa and Luka Vasic and make that a more competitive rotation, while also adding a high school or young transfer that can develop for a year and be ready to help in 2024.
