Today Charlotte Basketball’s anchor, Jahmir Young, entered the transfer portal. This one hurts. Young is a two-time alll-conference player, and recently entered the NBA Draft to solicit feedback. During his 3 seasons here at Charlotte, Young amassed over 1,400 points, 450 rebounds and 250 assists.
Young was a model of consistency here. During the past 2 seasons Young failed to scored double-figures only one time, at UAB where Charlotte lost 61-37 (he scored 8).
Coming off of what I’d consider a disappointing season this departure isn’t surprising, and I personally feel Young can play for any team in any league. I’ll be rooting for his success wherever he lands.
Previously Jared Garcia also entered the transfer portal, that gives Ron Sanchez and staff 4 open scholarships to work with. With Young transferring and losing Austin Butler and Clyde Trapp Jr. to graduation, Charlotte is losing its 3 top scorers and rebounders, as well as 3 of the top 4 distributors, from the 2021-22 campaign.
The backcourt for Charlotte is now largely unproven and inexperienced at the collegiate level. I fully expect the staff to land an seasoned guard via the transfer portal.
This roster shakeup drastically changes the outlook for 2022 as of now. You don’t replace someone like Jahmir Young with 1 player, it’s going to take a series of moves to absorb this departure.
