Charlotte nabs a Tight End out of the home state

Jake McTaggart is Charlotte's second commitment of the day—and 11th in the 2022 class—after Micah Bell announced his decision earlier today. McTaggart provides a heck of a target at 6'7, but also brings athleticism to the position. The tweet below highlights his top measurables over the Summer camp circuit.

Q&A with Jake McTaggart

A49: Jake, congratulations on your commitment to Charlotte. I know you recently trimmed your list to Charlotte, Liberty, Kansas and Troy. What led you to choose Charlotte?
JM: Ultimately my decision came down to the fit and the culture at Charlotte. It was the best fit for me, it felt right when I was and there big on family. That’s very Important to me and that influenced my decision a lot. As well as relationships that I made with Coach Cox, Coach Healy, and Coach Carney on my visits there. Was really a simple decision for me.

A49: Who on the Charlotte staff was your primary recruiter? What's that relationship like?
JM: Coach Cox was my guy through the whole process. We stayed in contact very regularly, he always let me know that I was the guy for him and how I was a priority to them. As we grew closer I started to learn his personality and he is someone I knew I would want to play for. I could tell on the field he was gonna be on you hard and coach you as hard as he could. But off the field he was gonna make sure you knew that he cared about you.

A49: What do you feel you can bring to the Tight End position here?
JM: I feel like I can be effective in the run game as well as a part of the passing game. Just gonna work hard and see what happens really.

A49: What are your thoughts on campus and the facilities from your visit/s to campus?
JM: Campus and the facilities are very nice. Charlotte is a really big campus and a lot of things to do etc. They have a really nice weight room, training room etc. Definitely take care of there guys.

A49: How's your Senior season going so far?
JM: It’s been a blast. I’ve really enjoyed it. Trying to make the most of it. It’s the first normal season I’ve had since I was a freshman, with injury my sophomore year and covid last year. Nothing like small town Friday night football. It’s something I will miss that’s for sure. Trying to enjoy every second of it and not take it for granted.

A49: Do you plan to enroll mid-year or will you finish out HS in the Spring?
JM: I haven’t decided either way yet but graduating early is something I am definitely considering. Trying to weigh out the pros and cons right now and figure out what is gonna be the best situation for me. I’d like to play my senior year of basketball and track with my team. But getting there early and getting a early start with the team and in the weight room is very intriguing as well. Just something I'm kind of considering right now.

A49: Do you have an idea for what you're looking to study at Charlotte?
JM: For now education. I want to be a history teacher and coach football. We’ll see what happens when I get to college but that’s the plan for now.

A49: Lastly, any message you'd like to share with Niner Nation?
JM: To Niner Nation, we’re gonna do special things. Charlotte is gonna be the place to be in the next 5 years. It’s started this year and it’s just gonna keep heading in this direction. Big things to come!
