Madness is set to begin soon for Charlotte Football
You can view all portal, JUCO and HS commitments on the 2024 commitment tracker.
The hope of this post is to track the portal chaos that is set to ensue for Biff Poggi and his Charlotte Football staff. Recruiting has been mentioned several times in either postgame or weekly press conferences, and Poggi has stated numerous times that players win games, not coaches.
The reality is that with the portal, has changed the game greatly, you have to play in the portal, right, you to be a player in the portal, in the transfer space. We have identified three areas of need on offense, and areas of need on defense.Biff Poggi, Charlotte Football Head Coach
It goes without saying that the QB position is the biggest need as Charlotte looks ahead for ways to fix the offense. Heading into their final game this season Charlotte has the 9th lowest offensive output in the FBS, next to last in the AAC (only ECU is worse). Jalon Jones graduates, Dom Shoffner should be out of eligibility as well. Micah Bowens (now in the portal) didn’t see the field, I’m not counting 1 snap. Trexler Ivey was up and down, with more down than up.
Charlotte is losing both starting offensive tackles (Lucas Gramlick and Jasper Parks). Parks was the best offensive addition from the portal this season for Charlotte, and is a great reminder that where the player comes from doesn’t matter (Sioux Falls). Mike Miller highlighted this spot on today’s presser, but I’d expect every spot to be looked at and added to on the offensive line. Quality depth has to be added here.
While Charlotte has had flashes of really good play from Jairus Mack and Jack Hestera, this room has been pretty inconsistent throughout the season, and has lacked the ability to create separation and open windows.
Realistically all three levels will be touched by the portal (or JUCO).
Defensive Coordinator Ryan Osborn touched on this position in recent weeks as a position that has to addressed. Wayne Jones and Isaiah Hazel will be gone. Marcus Robitaille participated in Senior Day festivities, so he could be departing as well.
Prince Bemah-Wallace, who has a year remaining, walked during Senior Day. We’ll see if Prince is back, but he appears to be on only experienced loss at this spot if he goes. Nikhai Hill-Green (has since entered the portal) and Demetrius Knight II both return, but there have been a slew of JUCO offers lately, including LB’s.
Mike Kelly, Austin Fontaine, Dez Morgan, and Julius Welschof all participated in Senior Day. Morgan, I believe, is the only player out of that group that has a year of eligibility remaining. Eyabi Okie-Anoma will also be departing due to exhausting eligibility. Even if Morgan returns, that’s a ton of experience up front to replay.
I’m also going to add Punter here as Charlotte will lose Grant Gonya. Gonya shined this year, and Charlotte needs to find his replacement.
I’ll work to update this as real-time as possible, but there will be a lot of them, so get ready for chaos.
