While some Charlotte 49ers teams have started their 2024 seasons, for all intents and purposes, things kickoff for Niner Nation at 8pm ET on Saturday night, as Charlotte hosts James Madison at Jerry Richardson Stadium. Can't make it? No problem, you can catch this one on ESPNU.

Biff Poggi entered the 704 like a lion, bubbling with bravado while talking about competing for championships in the AAC, immediately. Poggi, often lauded for his financial acumen and success, was unable to cash that check in year one, going 3-9 (2-6). Although the results weren't there on the field, you could see growth, especially defensively under Defensive Coordinator Ryan Osborn. Given the evolving landscape of the transfer portal, and its ability to transform a roster almost immediately, I expect we will see coaches now have a shorter leash. Even more so where Athletic Directors may be feeling pressure to win in revenue sports.

Let's rewind a few years to when Judy Rose stepped down from her role as Athletics Director, and a national search culminated with tabbing Mike Hill as her successor. That search was led by former Chancellor Phillip Dubois, not Charlotte's current Chancellor, Sharon Gaber. I think that's an important tidbit to keep in mind when trying to judge the level of pressure that may or may not be on Mike Hill at this time. Hill has received multiple contract amendments since being hired in April of 2018, with the most recent one coming in April 2021. That deal runs through June 30, 2026, and was executed under Gaber's leadership. While I'm not sure if any negotiations are under way for an extension at this time, that's a long time without amending terms.

Under Mike Hill Charlotte has had its ups and downs, with most of the ups coming in Olympic sports. His department also led a rebrand to the All-in-C mark, which the University is now leveraging, navigating the realignment waters to jettison Conference USA for the American Athletic Conference, and increased athletic foundation contributions each fiscal year. Will Healy and Ron Sanchez were Mike Hill's marquee hires; Healy was fired before completing his fourth season (we'll always have the Bahama's Bowl), and Sanchez (we'll always have the CBI Championship) stepped down to return to Virginia as an associate head coach. Both Healy and Sanchez finished their tenures with sub-.500 overall and in-conference records.

When looking at the master vision fundraising, I'd consider it a mixed bag. While Charlotte has secured funding for phase 1, the majority of that money has come from state funds and Smoky Bissell, with some coming from capital gifts. Unfortunately, Charlotte needs to dip into athletic department reserves to complete phase 1, which will push the stadium to approximately 18,000 seats (highlighted by a new press tower and luxury amenities). I'd be remiss to not mention Aaron Fearne and his promising start as Sanchez's replacement that earned him a 5-year contract that ends April 30, 2029.

While I could be entirely off-base here, I feel that if you couple the lack of success from Healy and Sanchez with Poggi's 3-9 start, and the lack of any (known) contractual movement for Mike Hill, it becomes easy for this Niner to see the importance of this football season for both Poggi and Hill's future at Charlotte.
