Assessing Charlotte Football’s portal needs

by Jan 4, 2024Football Recruiting

Charlotte’s already suffered their first post-New Year’s portal departure, as Demetrius Knight has announced he’s leaving. This loss stings, Knight spent several years at Georgia Tech and didn’t see many snaps, shines in 1 year here and is leaving. With the ability for multi-time transfers to be eligible immediately in the fall, I expect this to happen more to Charlotte, and others as players are getting back after the holiday break. It sucks, but you have to adapt, accept it and find a way to continuously improve your roster.

I won’t rehash Biffmas and their haul, but if you want a look back at that you can find it here.

Happy Brew Year?

Give the losses at linebacker, Nikhai Hill-Green, others and now Demetrius Knight, Charlotte must find another starter-level LB. It appears that NHG will not land at UCF after committing there and is visiting FSU. Could he find his way back to the 704? It’d be a big win for Charlotte should that happen.

You can never have enough OL depth, so I won’t be surprised if Charlotte looks to add more experienced, or seasoned bodies here as well. There’s a great foundation with what’s been added, plus Jonny King, Tyler Thomas, and Kendall Stanley.

Defensive line is another key area to I expect to be added too. Charlotte missed out on FSU transfer Ayobami Tifase after he committed to Georgia Tech. So far this offseason Charlotte has added only D’Andre Martin (South Carolina) via the portal, and Kendal Brown & Kainoa Davis via HS signees.

Given the recent offer to Austin Peay transfer and former Rocky River HS star Jevon McIver Jr, Charlotte is still looking to add secondary help as well via the portal.

Another quarterback? Max Brown will likely be afforded ample opportunity to be QB1 in the Spring and Fall camps, but I could see Charlotte looking for another scholarship QB to join this room as insurance, perhaps a grad transfer that is just looking for a nice landing spot and solid educational opportunities? Behind Brown is RS FR Carson Black who missed this year due to injury, Deshawn Purdie who is a true FR from Maryland, and then you have walk-ons Trexler Ivey and Steven Johnson.

What’s next?

It sounds like Charlotte could host a small group of visitors this weekend, I hope to have more on that tomorrow for subscribers.

In case you missed the news on Twitter yesterday, it sounds like Biff Poggi and Ryan Osborn have their replacement for recently departed Defensive Back’s Coach Rod Ojong (Indiana). Ty Greenwood will be joining the staff in the same role. He was at UNC-Chapel Hill this past season as a Defensive Analyst and spent the previous 4 seasons at the FCS level with Elon and NCCU as Defensive Passing Game Coordinator and Cornerback Coach.
