Charlotte 49ers Director of Athletics Mike Hill has pulled the trigger and named Aaron Fearne as the permanent head coach. After a so-so non-conference slate, Fearne’s group has gelled and now sits at 9-2 in the American Athletic Conference, good for second place. He has the Niners are playing tough-nose style of play, no doubt mirroring the attitude of Fearne.
I’ll share additional information when available regarding the contractual details. It’s worth noting that UNC Charlotte does have a regularly scheduled Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday at the Student Union, it will likely be approved during a closed session, and an emergency session was held this morning for BOT Trustees.
My expectations on his deal
5-year deals are the most common duration, and as far as financial terms, I’d anticipated Fearne’s salary being in the $750,000 – $1,000,000 range. What remains to be seen is what will Fearne do with his staff this offseason? He immediately changed S&C lead after taking over (or it was highly coincidental in when the change occurred) and brought in assistant Connor Henry to backfill his spot after Ron Sanchez unceremoniously quit the program on June 6th, 2023. Vic Sfera was a part of Sanchez initial staff, and Kevin Smith replaced Kotie Kimble after he departed for the Miami Hurricanes.
